Rosaries for Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time is the longest stretch of the church year: thirty-three or thirty-four weeks once Christmas and Easter and their seasons have been counted out. The English name undersells it. It is ordinal rather than ordinary — the weeks are simply numbered — and the point of them is that they continue. Green is what the church wears for continuing.

These are the pieces made for that. A rosary is not mainly an object for great occasions; it is an object for Tuesdays, told on the same walk at the same hour for years. The pieces here are quieter than the pale ones and less demanding than the dark ones, and they are the group Claudia says she would keep for herself.

There is more range in it than the colour suggests. Two are green: one flat and cool, for the end of a working day, and one warmer and brighter, the green of a walled kitchen garden in July. Two are brown and were built to be carried — one plain enough that nothing on it is decorative, one closed twice over at every link because it will live in a coat pocket or a glovebox. Two are nearly colourless and take whatever light is in the room. One shifts along its own length from blue-green to amber and back, named for the tide, and suits a prayer said while walking.

If you have never owned a hand-made piece and are not buying it for a particular day, start here rather than with the feast-day pieces. These are the ones that get used, and the ones most likely to still be in use in twenty years.

Every one is wire-linked: fifty-nine beads and more, each turned onto its own link and closed by hand, over the better part of a day. Made once, and not made again.
